Greece earned a spot in the Euro 2008 finals after beating rival Turkey a month ago and with two games left before the qualifying round was over. Yesterday, the Euro 2004 champions hosted lowly Malta for their last home game before the finals giving their fans a chance to cheer their team on their way to defend their title this summer. And the Greek players did not disappoint earning an easy 5-0 win over their guests. Greek striker Theofanis Gekas scored a hat trick to add a bit of flare to the event. Compared to the country’s 2004 campaign when they shocked European soccer wining the championship (defeating host Portugal twice along the way,) this time around Greece is already considered a real contender for the trophy. Whether the Greek will be able to repeat their 2004 triumph remains to be seen but the players believe that they can do it.

In the meantime, a total of 12 teams have secured a place in the finals including Italy, Netherlands, Poland, Croatia, France, Greece, Austria, Switzerland, Czech Republic, Germany, Spain and Romania.
