Olympiacos logoOlympiacos fans are living the dream tonight; after a long, very long wait of 10 years, their beloved Greek team has advanced to the round of 16 in the Champions League. After 6 excellent performances against opponents of high caliber such as Real Madrid and Lazio, Olympiacos earned their spot for the knock out stage of the competition with an emphatic win over the German Werder Bremen. Midfielder Ieroklis Stoltidis scored Olympiacos’ first and third goals while he assisted on his team’s second goal and he rightfully earned the man of the match award. Darko Kovacevic scored the second goal for the Greek side. The good news for Werder Bremen is that by finishing third in their group they will still have a chance to claim a European trophy with the participation in the UEFA cup. Lazio finished last in the group after their defeat to Real Madrid today and they will have to wait until next season for another chance to win one of the Champions League or UEFA cups.

Sometimes I wonder if Olympiacos is destined to win the Champions League trophy this year in an effort reminiscent of the Greek national team’s win of Euro 2004. I guess we are going to have to wait a few more months before we know for sure.

Defending champions Liverpool also managed to advance by defeating Marseille 4-0 at the Velodrome in their last game of the group stage. The English scored two goals in the first 12 minutes of the match to release tension and cruise the rest of the game to a comfortable victory and to the next round of the Champions League competition.
