Lots of soccer played today as traditionally boxing day is match day in the UK. Of all games played today, Chelsea versus Aston Villa was by far the most entertaining; some might say that the game was a great advertisement for soccer. Both teams combined for 8 goals in wild game that resulted in a 4-4 tie that had everything including 3 players sent off with red cards. The next fews games look difficult for Chelsea with Ashley Cole and Ricardo Carvalho suspended for three games each and John Terry, Didier Drogba, Frank Lampard and Florent Malouda all injured.

Chelsea found themselves 2 goals behind as the first half was about to expire. The home team fought back in the second half and they managed to go ahead in score 4-3 only to give up the win in injury time when Villa’s Barry scored on a penalty kick resulting from Cole’s stopping the ball with hand inside the penalty box.

Chelsea had remained undefeated at home for a whooping 72 games before their meeting with Aston Villa and they must be happy that they managed to keep it that way for at least another game. They have to get healthy and ready for the rest of the season as they are now 7 points behind leader Manchester United and 6 behind Arsenal; Arsenal lost the top spot to Manchester after playing to a 0-0 tie against Portsmouth. Chelsea also have a tough match coming up in February against Greek champions Olympiacos for the Champions League tournament knock out round of 16. The Greek side have shown that this year are not going down easy and unless Chelsea get their full squad back in time, there is a good chance that their dreams of a Champions League trophy will remain a dream for one more year.
