What do crosstown rivals Inter Milan and AC Milan have in common? Both teams were eliminated from Champions League by English teams Liverpool and Arsenal respectively; and did I mention that both were humiliated at home? AC Milan was the first to bow out from the competition falling victim to a much younger and hungrier Arsenal club who dominated the Italian team away from home on Tuesday.

Inter Milan having lost the first game in England by a two nil score and playing at San Siro needed 3 goals to win a ticket to the round of 8 in Champions League. But Liverpool would have had none of that showing up in Milan to play soccer and move on in the competition. Inter started the game dominating everywhere but soon Liverpool balanced possession causing further disarray in Inter. This resulted in a really stupid red card for Nicolas Burdisso early in the second half (50th minute to be exact) making Inter’s task even harder; I should mention that in the first game between the two teams Marco Materazzi was also sent off with a red card so maybe at the end of the day Inter players need blame only themselves for getting kicked out of the competition. In the 64th minute, Fernando Torres sealed the deal for the London club scoring the only goal of the game with a well taken shot from the top of the penalty box. This was Torres’ 4th goal in the competition this year.

In the end, two days before celebrating its 100th birthday, Inter Milan disappointed their fans with an early exit from the Champions League competition. But for what it is worth, they did lose to a team that has won the Champions League trophy 5 times in the history of the competition.
