Chelsea Upset by Fenerbahce

Chelsea lost to Fenerbahce, 2-1, in a game which they were supposed to dominate. The game was played today in Istanbul as the first leg in the Champions League quarter-final. Chelsea left the field in shock, as no one had expected the loss. The team had shutout their past 6 opponents in the Champions League. They started this game off wonderfully too, only to “sleep” and “lose the game”, as Avram Grant of Chelsea said afterwards. Overconfidence seems to have been Chelsea’s biggest enemy in this one. All hope is not lost for the team though, as the second game will be played on their home field where they will have a chance to overcome the deficit. It was still very disappointing to lose this one, especially with such high intentions. Chelsea will need to win the rematch at Stamford Bridge next week if they want to advance to the semi-finals.
On the other side of the ball was Fenerbahce, who is obviously very happy with their victory. They made a few mistakes early on (including an own goal by Deivid), but were able to come in and have a solid second half, which secured their victory. Deivid later revived himself for the own goal by making a miraculous goal with only nine minutes remaining. He had picked up the ball from 35 yards out and shot it into the corner of the net for the go-ahead goal. The hostile Turkish fans did their part as well by creating immense noise when the English had the ball. That was no excuse however, as Chelsea has been through many games with similar conditions. Turkey truly was the underdog who overcame all obstacles in this one. The country is really excited for Fenerbahce’s away game at Chelsea where they hope to pull off another upset in the upcoming week.
