The Euro2008 referees have now been selected and given their duties for the upcoming tournament that takes place starting June. The committee has made it clear to the referees that they want the image of soccer withheld throughout the tournament and not to hesitate handing out cards to questionable fouls. They want to protect the players during the tournament as well and often times when countries meet it can get heated so I agree with where the committee is coming from and I think the referees should call strict but fair matches. In total there will be 44 match officials present at the Euro2008 tournament and they are all set into specific teams comprising of two assistants and one referee all from within the same country. There will be a total of twelve of these teams and then there will be eight more match officials used as fourth referees. There will also be fifth referees attending all the matches in case one of the referees or assistant referees becomes injured and unable to finish the match.

The referees have been told to respect the teams and players and that the same goes for the players needing to respect the referees. The committee wants to make sure the referees are calling strict matches and not letting any of the horseplay go unpenalized. The referees are also there to protect the players and in order to ensure the players protection the referee needs solid control over each match played. The group chosen as referees for the Euro2008 are the best of the best and can easily control the matches. The committee carefully chose each referee and they made sure they chose the best possible referees to match the games this year.
