The Avram Grant Enigma

And the story continues. This season has certainly been a remarkable one for Chelsea, whether for better or for worse. The team has been in the news constantly and that continues today with questions about Manager Avram Grant. People are questioning his future with the team due to eccentric behavior. Looking at the stats Avram Grant has done a phenomenal job, but for some Chelsea fans that doesn’t seem to be enough. Jose Mourinho, Grant’s predecessor had a very appealing and delightful personality. The fans loved him and they wanted something similar in their next coach. When it was announced that Avram Grant would be taking over the team many fans didn’t even know who the man was. But Chelsea owner Roman Abramovich did. He knew Grant’s expertise in strategy and he knew that he could lead the team to success.
And that he is doing. Chelsea currently sits on Manchester United’s tail for number one. After Man U’s tie at Blackburn the possibility of winning the league is wide open. On top of that, Chelsea is preparing for the Champions league semifinal. Avram Grant has led to the brink of the ultimate success, can he pull through? Abramovich certainly hopes so and with Chelsea still in contention for the ultimate championship, last year’s move seems good from his perspective. Sure Jose Mourinho was loved, but he was never able to bring Chelsea a Champions League trophy. He brought six trophies to the team in 3 years, but Grant is on the verge of making all that meaningless. He may be criticized now, but if he leads the team to Moscow (where the Champions League final is) his critics will have to give him credit and respect. It really is an enigma that such an insightful and thus far successful coach is going through this kind of scrutiny. But, that’s soccer in England for you.
