Manchester United and Barcelona left the Champions League semi-final with no victor and no loser. The teams played solid defense and the goaltenders were phenomenal leading to a final score of 0-0. Despite the lack of a loser, Christiano Ronaldo left the game in disappointment after failing to capitalize on a good chance after three minutes when he missed a penalty shot. The goal would have given Man U a much desired lead in the away game. Ronaldo played strongly for the rest of the game but was unable to conjure anything up. He vowed after the game that he will score against Barcelona at Old Trafford next Tuesday.
Although Ronaldo was upset over his miss, Manager Sir Alex Ferguson said he would not blame the winger. Manchester had a tough first half, with Barcelona dominating ball possession at roughly 73%. Neither team ended up doing anything in the end, but Ronaldo among others were also unhappy at their side’s performance. Although Barcelona held the ball for longer it was Man U that had more big opportunities. Coach Ferguson later said that he was upset with the lack of possession and of course the lack of scoring, but he was pleased with the solid defense. The defensive performance was made even more noteworthy due to the absence of Nemanja Vidic, who was unable to attend the game after being rushed to the hospital on Tuesday night with pain in his stomach. Barcelona manager Frank Rijkaard was also content with his team’s defense.
Heading into this game many people didn’t expect the lack of offense. In there past seven meetings Barcelona and Manchester United have combined for 28 points including 12 total points in their last two matches. Both teams came into this game unbeaten in Europe this year and they will continue their battle in Old Trafford next week in what will most likely be a thriller.
