This is why Roman Abramovich, owner of Chelsea, brought over Avram Grant to coach. It is because he believed that Grant was capable of what now has proven he could achieve: leading Chelsea to the Champions League finals. The team advanced today after edging Liverpool, in a 3-2 victory. Frank Lampard scored the winning goal on a penalty kick. Lampard has had a rough week with the recent death of his mother and this will certainly be a nice change of mood for him. Didier Drogba certainly deserves some of the credit for the appearance, since it was he who scored the other two goals for the Blues. Chelsea is now in the finals for the first time ever. Chelsea hopes to become the first London team to ever win the championship. They will square off of their rivals, Manchester United in what is bound to be another thriller.
With this win Chelsea extended their unbeaten streak at home to an unbelievable 82! In the wake of the successes, Grant said, “I am proud to create history in the first year as a manager, with all the difficulties we had.” Considering that Chelsea is competing for championships in both the Champions League and the Premiership, Grant’s job no longer looks at risk. All of his critics have been shut up and Chelsea fans finally realize that he is one of the best things that has happened to them in a while.
Ironically, Chelsea is competing with the same Manchester United team for both championships. Man U has been leading both races for the majority of the season and they were the favorite for most of the year as well. With Chelsea’s latest upswing it is arguable who is in a better position, but Manchester United will definitely give it all they have got in order to finish strong. Both sides want both championships more than anything and the battles for the reward will be amazing. Some great soccer is on the way, so stay tuned.
