Portsmouth and Olympiakos capture the FA and Hellas Online cups respectively
Filed Under Greek Super League, Premiership |
The FA Cup final this year didn’t have the clash of the titans we all enjoyed last year when powerhouses Manchester United and Chelsea played for the trophy. With Portsmouth and Cardiff City earning the right to compete at Wembley stadium some would have expected a less than exciting game. Yet, the game was as lively as it could be and Portsmouth managed a 1-0 victory over their opponent to win the FA Cup for the first time since 1939. Nwankwo Kanu was the goal scorer for Portsmouth.
Another team hoping for a cup title after a long drought, Aris ThessalonĂki fell to Olympiakos in the Hellas Online cup final by a 2-0 score. Serbian striker Darko Kovacevic and Polish defender Michal Zewlakow scored one goal each from two passes from the game’s MVP Luciano Galletti. The Argentinian Galletti has proven to be Olympiakos’ best transfer this season. Olympiakos ended the season dominating Greek soccer once again after winning both the Greek Superleague and since Saturday the Greek cup.
This is the 23rd time the team brings the cup home and the 13th double (winning both the league and cup in the same season) becoming single handily the Greek team with the most silverware. Not all is good for Olympiakos, however. The end of the season finds the club looking for a new coach after letting go Takis Lemonis a couple of months ago and not renewing the contract of assistant coach Jose Segura who replaced Lemonis.
Congratulations to both teams for their cup wins and best of luck in next year’s competitions.
