Chelsea fail logoManchester United have bested Chelsea once more defeating the latter in penalty kicks to capture the 2008 Champions League trophy. I don’t want to bore you with the details of the match because you can find them just about anywhere online. Briefly, the game ended with the two teams tied 1-1. During extra time play, neither team managed to convert any of their chances and so the game was decided in penalty kicks mostly decided by a John Terry miss and an Edwin van der Sar save to give Manchester United the coveted trophy for the 3rd time.

The sad story here is Chelsea and their overpriced roster cursed to underachieve. It seems that the policy of buying some of the best soccer talent available has not paid dividends for Russian owner Roman Abramovich . This year, especially, Chelsea finished second to United both in the Premier League (just 2 points short of winning the title) and, of course, Champions League. Chelsea were also not contenders for the FA cup which was decided last week with them nowhere in sight. So, what now?

I don’t really know but Chelsea might have to shake up their line up. Get rid of some of their overpaid assets and rebuild the team with younger players thirsty for titles. It is also likely that Avram Grant will not be coaching the team next year even though he seems confident that he will continue to guide the underachieving club.

Chelsea’s future is certainly going to be interesting. Let’s see how this year’s failures play out for the club.
