Euro 2008 logoDefending European champions Greece have had a major wake up call yesterday losing a friendly game to lowly Hungary. Two weeks before the tournament’s start, Greece showed little form and passion as Hungary scored 3 goals in the span of 16 minutes to take a commanding lead and eventually finish the game 3-2 over the champs. Worst for Greece was the injury of goalkeeper Antonios Nikopolidis who had to be substituted in the 22nd minute of the game.

After an easy friendly against Cyprus, Greece looked poised to live up to everyone’s expectations of being a real contender for the European Championship trophy come Jun 7th. After the game against Hungary, many will doubt if this is still the case. That said, Greeks are notorious for having a bad game or two and then follow it up with a serious of improbable wins just like they did during the qualifying round for the 2004 championship. Similarly, in their efforts to qualify for the upcoming tournament, Greece dropped a 4-0 decision against Turkey at home early in the stage but then went on to finish top of their group undefeated. In other words, Greeks like being the underdogs so this wake up call may have come at a good time for them just like their German coach Otto Rehhagel said at the press conference after the game.
