The real games haven’t even begun, but Italy has already lost one of its players to injuries. It isn’t any player either, in fact it is their captain Fabio Cannavaro. The team declared that the 34-year-old would miss all of Euro 2008 due to an ankle injury today. Cannavaro hurt his ankle in training today when he crashed into teammate Giorgi Chiellini. The collision was very bad due to the way Cannavaro landed and he ended up being treated for quite some time on the pitch. Medics eventually decided to bring him to the hospital. He left the field on a stretcher and would later find out that he had torn ankle ligaments.

You hate to see it like this. Whether Italy is your favorite team or your worst enemy, no one likes to see such a horrible thing happen. Not only will Cannavaro miss the whole tournament, but he has gone through a very gruesome injury. He now faces the pains of recovery and rehab, which will surely mean he will be out for some time. At the age of 34, the defender doesn’t have too many years of pro ball left and this injury just cuts away at how many more games he will play in before retirement. It is really a sad story and everyone should wish the best for him so that he can get back on the field as soon as possible.

The news also means that Italy will have a big gap where the presence of their captain once was. Perhaps the team will be able to use the moment as a motivation to play harder, but it will certainly be tough. Yet, things must move on and they will. Cannavaro will hold a press conference with Roberto Donadoni tomorrow concerning the issue and Fiorentina defender Alessandro Gamberini has already been called up to take his roster spot. Let’s all just hope that Cannavaro can make a successful recovery so that he can play in upcoming tournaments.
