Organizing a soccer tournament at the Euro Cup level is not child’s play. Check out some of the numbers from the Austria-Switzerland European competition (and these are not the game-related statistics as in the number of goals and yellow cards.)
- The total organizational budget is roughly 234 million Euro (not too shabby, hey?)
- The number of tickets made available and sold was 1,050,000.
- The number of fans who participated in the ticket lottery was 588.716 from 142 different countries (wait, there are only 16 countries competing in the finals) for a total of 10.539.177 applications. Comparing with the number of actual tickets available, there was a 10% chance of winning a ticket.
- During the first 24 hours of ticket availability, a good 53.978 different people bid for a ticket on the official Euro 2008 web site.
- Soccer fans will access to 69,400 bottles of wine that have been available for the duration of the tournament (what no beer?) Of those, 41,640 and 27,760 bottles are white and red wine respectively.
- Where are all those soccer fans going to be staying? Apparently, 21,400 rooms in 408 hotels have been booked for the 3 week duration of the tournament. Of those hotels, 220 are in Austria and 188 in Switzerland.
- With all the money spent on organizing the tournament, you’d think that there was no need for volunteers. Well, think again! 17,644 people applied to volunteer for the duration of the competition and of those only 5,000 were selected while 10,000 had to give a 30-minute interview before selection (I’ve had job interviews that lasted less than this!)
- Security at the games is also tight. Every ticket holder has to pass a 308-point inspection before entering the stadium!
- Media coverage is also huge. First of all, 30 cameras and a helicopter provide TV coverage for each game. In the meantime, 10,000 representatives of the media are in Austria and Switzerland providing minute-by-minute coverage of the Euro 2008 competition while it is estimated that the media organizations will use 100 kilometers of cables to bring all the action to our homes.
- Some 8,551 parking tickets were issued specially for the Euro.
- To keep visitors localized and to prevent them from getting lost, the co-hosts Austria and Switzerland have placed 14,000 signs in the cities that are holding the games.
- Finally, each of the cities hosting a game will receive from UEFA a total of 740,000 Euro for each game played there (in case you thought the money is coming out of tax-payers’ pockets!)
its’ a fantastic reporting …… after many days i have seen such a nice report .thanks the whole team for teir effort to meet our hunger of information
