Luiz Felipe Scolari to coach Chelsea
Scolari has his hands full coaching Portugal towards a European Championship title (and it looks like he is doing a great job so far) but at the same time he is thinking of his future which is going to be with London club Chelsea. The latter announced today that Scolari will be the man to replace Avram Grant who was let go after leading his team to a second place finish both in the Premier League and Champions League in both cases behind Manchester United.
Scolari will be rewarded handsomely for the privilege to coach Chelsea. Apparently, he will receive more than 6 million pounds sterling for a 3 year contract. And to a large degree he deserves every penny of it. In 2002, Scolari coached Brazil winning the World Cup while the following year took over Portugal which he led to the Euro 2004 final finishing in second place behind Greece. Two years later, Portugal finished 4th in the World Cup once again with Scolari in control. This year, his team is the favorite to take home the European Championships trophy.
The move to Chelsea should not have been a big surprise for the Portuguese fans considering that Scolari had announced his intentions of moving on at the end of the Euro Cup. Many had already suggested that he was going to be Chelsea’s next coach considering that the post was available and owner Abramovich could easily afford him.
Let’s see if Chelsea will finally win some titles to match their overinflated egos.
