Gilberto Silva soccer playerIt looks like Arsenal will be losing one of their most experienced midfield players. Gilberto Silva is rumored a move to Greece for club Panathinaikos. Arsenal are not denying that the player is in contact with the Greek club while most news outlets in Greece consider the deal practically done as long as the money issue is worked out between the two sides.

If the deal goes through, Panathinaikos will have made his most expensive transfer in its history with an estimated total cost of 10 million Euro. Until now, the only soccer club in Greece that was willing to spend such large amounts of money to bring know soccer stars to the local championship has been Olympiakos. The most recent huge transfer for Olympiakos was the well know Brazilian Rivaldo who now continues to play for AEK Athens.

Panathinaikos’ gain is going to be Arsenal’s loss who stand to lose a very experienced player. Gilberto was kept on the bench for much of last year losing his starting position on the team. But he had said he wanted to stay and earn back his spot instead of transferring to another club. I guess he changed his mind but I am really surprised that Arsenal are letting him go without a fight. Who is going to be there to offer guidance to the young players without Gilberto. Not to mention that at only 331years old, Gilberto Silva could have contributed at least another couple of years of quality soccer to the team.

At any rate, it looks like Panathinaikos is determined to build a strong squad for this coming season in an effort to do well in the Champions Leagues but also regain the title in the Greek Superleague which Olympiakos has monopolized for the better part of the last decade. I wonder if Olympiakos will now open up their budget to try and counteract this move from rival club Panathinaikos.

Im Olympicos but that is a great move for panathinikos and i hope we get someone ‘big’ too. Players like Silva will improve the Greek Super Legue.
