Arsene Wenger has added to Arsenal’s defensive corps by completing a deal with Manchester United that sends Mikael Silvestre over for a fee that is yet to be announced. The defenseman has agreed to a new two-year deal with the Gunners as he hopes to have a successful comeback after an injury plagued year last season.

This deal should be good for both sides as Silvestre will get more playing time with his new team. Manchester United on the other hand will get some money in return for a player that would not be a top starter. Nemanja Vidic and Rio Ferdinand seem to be Sir Alex Ferguson’s top defensive pair and the team would have had a hard time fitting in Silvestre and the amount of time he desires.
Silvestre’s veteran experience is also something that attracted Wenger who is going into the upcoming season with a very young squad. The 31-year-old will be able to provide a backbone for the team and will also help in weak areas due to his versatility at playing various defensive positions.

Silvestre told reporters that he enjoyed his time with Man U, but is excited to start a new chapter in his career. He is looking forward to the challenge of bringing Arsenal above and beyond where they have been in recent years. Ferguson thanked Silvestre for the years of great service as the two spoke after the deal.
