Manchester United started the new season with a 1-0 victory over Portsmouth today. With the win they ended their losing streak at Fratton Park and kicked off what is expected to be another great season. Darren Fletcher hit the only goal of the game during the 32nd minute. With Ryan Giggs and a couple of others out with injuries, United was very happy with the victory.

Pompey on the other hand had another disappointing night after a 4-0 lose to Chelsea in their last game. Jermain Defoe and Peter Crouch failed to connect again as they looked anything but electrifying. The team is in for a long season if the front line can’t pick it up soon.

Overall, the match was pretty exciting despite the low score. The Man U players were intense after seeing the FA Cup trophy being paraded prior to the start of the game. Last March it was Pompey who beat United in the quarter-final game and seeing the other side bloat energized the visiting players.

Both teams attacked several times with 13-14 shots a piece, but United’s offense was more on gear. They dominated possession of the ball with an overwhelming 64%. After the game Portsmouth manager Harry Redknapp told reporters that he thinks Man U and Chelsea will duke it out for the Premier League title once more this year.
