Sir Bobby RobsonThe past 24 hours have been the saddest for the soccer community with the unfortunate passing of the legendary Sir Bobby Robson. Cancer was the evil disease that took him away from us. Bobby passed on peacefully at his home in County Durham.

He will be missed dearly.

The 6 decades of his life that Sir Bobby Robson dedicated to the beautiful game both as a player and coach is a legacy that will never be forgotten. A great personality and coach who led team England to the World Cup semi-finals in 1990.

He started playing soccer for Fulham in 1950 in a forward position. He finished his soccer playing career with the Vancouver Royals in 1968 having made 20 appearances with team England scoring 4 goals. Eventually he turned his attention to coaching which is no surprise because soccer was in his blood and he could not live without it. He managed Ipswich Town for 13 years leading them to domestic and International glory (won the UEFA cup in 1981) before moving on to bigger clubs (PSV Eindhoven, FC Porto, Barcelona and Newcastle United) and eventually his country’s national team. Interestingly, while managing Ipswich Town he completed only 14 player transfers depending on the team’s academies to produce good players for the Premier team; and he model was successful. It is a shame that no team today follows a similar model and instead prefer to spend 10s of millions of dollars to purchase talent from other clubs.

Those fortunate to have met and worked with him will never forget his great personality, humility, and humor. Read some great Bobby Robson quotes.

R.I.P. Sir Bobby Robson.
