He chose to come to the Bundesliga instead of a return to the Premiership because, as he said, he “needed a new challenge”, and it will be interesting to see if he can hit top form again and get back in contention for the Netherlands squad for this summer.

The German newspaper “Sportbuilt” published 10 interesting facts about the former Real Madrid and Manchester United striker that make a good read:

  1. His real name is actually Rutgerus Johannes Martinus van Nistelroo?.
  2. He originally wanted to be a basketball player.
  3. In his first training session with ManUnited back in 2001, he came with an autograph book.
  4. In his five seasons in England, he did not score a single goal outside the penalty area.
  5. Ruud’s wife is best friends with the wife of Rafael van der Vaart, Hamburg’s last star Dutch player.
  6. He began has career as a midfielder for Den Bosch in 1993.
  7. During his time at Den Bosch, he was constantly made to watch Ajax’s matches to learn from the legendary Denis Bergcamp.
  8. He has scored double-digits in every season he has played as a professional football player.
  9. He is the first footballer to become top scorer in England, Holland and Spain.
  10. PSV Eindhoven paid a record amount of money between Dutch teams when signing him from Heerenven in 1998 for ƒ 12 million gulden.
