Brazilian side Santos unveiled their new loan signing Robinhio in quite the spectacular fashion—by having him land in the center of the football pitch in a helicopter. To top it off, he was presented to the Santos fans by Pele, who is the club’s most famous player. Robinhio seemed delighted to be there, but the question is—does he really deserve all this praise?

Like many Brazilians, he crossed continents to the Spanish La Liga where he made his name and became a top star with Real Madrid, securing his place in the Brazilian national team. As soon as he reached the top, however, his form declined, he was dropped to the bench, and began complaining to the newspapers about his position.

Soon after Manchester City were brought, they offered him a hefty deal which he accepted, despite bigger clubs in Europe offering him a chance as well. His career in the Premiership started well, just like in Madrid, but he was hampered by a couple of injuries last season and hasn’t really played a good game since. That didn’t stop him from going to the newspapers again and practically begging Barcelona to sign him, but the Spanish champions refused this self-offer.

So even though he is a native of Santos, I am not quite sure he deserves a heroes welcome, but the fans will certainly be thrilled to have a big name come back to them. Maybe it will indeed turn out to be a good move for him, and he can try to earn his place back in the Brazilian squad.
