Although the Bundesliga is often cited as an example of safe stadiums and proper conduct, that doesn’t stop things like this happening from time to time. Basically, their 2-1 loss to Nuremberg was the tipping point for some Hertha Berlin fans, who armed themselves with steel bars and invaded the pitch at the final whistle.

The players and staff from both teams escaped to the dressing rooms, and the situation was subdued in a timely matter for there to be any incidents. The attackers, of course, were condemned by the club officials, and it’s unlikely they’ll be attending matches again any time soon.

This anger stemmed from the fact that Hertha have suffered a dramatic change of fortunes in under a season. Last year they barely missed out on a Champions League spot, but this time around they are rooted to the bottom of the table, and relegation seems like a real possibility. Their home defeat to Nuremberg lifted their opposition out of the relegation spot, and the winner was struck deep into injury time.

On one hand, given the circumstances you can understand why fans would be so furious, but storming the stadium most definitely won’t help anyone. It won’t make the players try any harder, and it won’t make the opposition play any worse. If anything, it will just rack up fines and suspensions against the club. Not that one expects much logic when it comes to football passion, but things like this shouldn’t happen.
