Well, it might not be a direct response to Adidas’s ad, but Nike have certainly brought the roof down with an absolutely epic World Cup commercial. They had film director Alejandro González Iñárritu make it, and he doesn’t spare any resources.

The ad shows international stars such as Drogba, Rooney, Ribery, Ronaldhino and Ronaldo living out fantasies and nightmares on the pitch, where they either turn into national heroes or end up living in trailers. It’s both hilarious and awesome, with Rooney’s bits standing out the most I’d say. There’s even a cameo for tennis grand star Roger Federer who gets creamed at ping pong by Rooney in one of the fantasies. Homer Simpson’s Ronal-d’oh! is funny too.

The only thing not quite right is that Nike apparently forgot to ask Brazil coach Dunga whether he would be selecting Ronaldhino. It doesn’t make much sense, but the AC Milan playmaker was left out of the squad, and so we won’t be seeing the tricks he pulls off in this video at the World Cup. I suppose Dunga is determined to install more practicality and less trickery in his squad this time around.

Otherwise, if this doesn’t get you pumped for the World Cup, I’m not sure what will. One can watch this commercial over and over again and not get tired. I’d say it’s up there with the best, along with Eric Cantona’s Elvis Presley ad, which was played on long after it first aired.
