West Ham striker Benni McCarthy has been told to “cut back on the ice cream, cake and wine”, or face heavy fines from the club. The striker’s weight has been an issue ever since he signed from Blackburn one year ago, for a region of around 2.5 British pounds, aka way more than he is actually worth at the present time. He was bought in to help the Hammers with their goal-scoring problem, but despite heavy pressure and constant monitoring from the club’s doctors, he has been unable to control his weight.

It’s both funny and sad, as Benni was once one of the best strikers in Europe. In his first season for Rovers he finished the second highest goalscorer of the league, and was playing eye-popping football. Whatever the reason for his weight troubles, it cost him his place in the Rovers starting line-up, he failed to make South Africa’s World Cup squad, and now he may be heading out the door of West Ham too. His time at a top European league is surely coming to an end, unless he finds the motivation to help himself. But to be honest, if he couldn’t do that for his country hosting the World Cup, I don’t know if he can get better now. I am guessing this is also down to a medical issue, but then West ham fining him for that would seem rather excessive.

The idea of him training hard all day and then running back home to gorge on cake and hamburgers is a bit absurd, but it seems that’s the only explanation West Ham have to offer.
