People keep saying soccer in America is just about to blow up, it will rise in popularity, the time is coming etc. etc. – but if one is to look at the facts, it is still a long way off from displacing or even equaling other top American sports, such as baseball, American football, or basketball.

However, the MLS continues to grow, and it is inevitable that new fans will be attracted by that development. David Beckham was a huge hit when he signed for the LA Galaxy a couple of years ago, and now it looks like the top French goal-scorer of all time, Thierry Henry, is heading to the East Coast to represent the New York Red Bulls. Even though he had mostly been confined to the bench last season for Barcelona, he is still a superstar player that most top clubs in Europe would love to have. The fact that he has chosen New York speaks volumes.

Now, is this any different than a player going to a Middle Eastern club for a nice last paycheck? It is, I would argue. As seen by the US’s performance at the World Cup, they are definitely going up, and are riding a wave of momentum that shouldn’t stop any time soon. Not to mention that the more top players go to the States, the easier it will be for others to follow. These are exciting times for MLS fans for sure.

David Beckham was not well received upon his return to MLS as LA Galaxy hardcore fans booed him nonstop during his first appearance back after a 5-month trek in Europe on behalf of AC Milan. Beckham played his first came back in a friendly match against the Italian team but Galaxy fans greeted him with signs showing their disapproval of his dissing their team and running off to Europe for half the MLS season.

Some of the signs read, “Go home fraud,” “Hey Becks, Here Before You, Here After You, Here Despite You,” “23: Repent,” and “Is evil something u are…or something u do?”

Beckham made everything worse when he moved towards the stands and confronted the angry fans. In video footage (see below) we can briefly see the English man making an obscene gesture towards the fans and then asking them to come down to fight with him. One fan jumped down to meet him but security got in the way and removed him from the stadium.

For someone who has angered soccer fans more than once, you’d think that Beckham would know how to handle such a situation. His behavior is unacceptable and the MLS should discipline him just like UEFA would in a similar situation. And at the end of the day, if he doesn’t want to play in the USA (as he has stated indirectly a number of times since crossing the Atlantic) then he should take his game back to Europe or retire once and for all. AC Milan have expressed interest to bring the star back to Italy for one last season and I am certain a deal could be worked out with Galaxy considering the current situation. At the end of the day, all Beckham really wants is a chance to go to South Africa with England next summer and he knows that unless he plays in Europe again this year, he is not likely to make the cut.

Why in the world did he think that moving to MLS was a good idea to begin with? His experiment failed. Admit it and move David.

David Beckham’s return to the MLS after what was supposed to be a brief stint at Serie A is turning into a Greek tragedy as the player wants to stay in Europe and LA Galaxy wants him back to the USA in March. I should remind you that David has been in Italy since December on loan until March 9, 2009.

A few days ago, Beckham expressed openly for the first time his desire to remain with AC Milan. His decision is mostly driven by his hope to make a return with England’s 2010 World Cup squad in a last effort for the superstar to conquer the only tournament that has eluded him and his England mates for so long. And everything looks good for the aging midfielder considering that England manager Fabio Capello has called him back to the squad for the friendly game against Spain this coming week.

AC Milan are also very happy with the addition of the English soccer star who has risen from the dead (so to speak) to give the Italian club much hope for a strong finish to the second half of Serie A. The Italians have remained undefeated since Beckham’s debut with the team with the Englishman scoring 2 goals and assisting one more. As a result, Milan have recently attempted to buy Beckham from Galaxy offering somewhere between 10 and 20 million dollars. LA Galaxy refused this offer although but my guess is that they are just holding back for more money. Why not? Both the player and his new team have expressed their desire to keep the man in Europe so it makes sense for Galaxy to try and make the most money possible from the inevitable deal.

LA pays Beckham 6.5 million dollars a year to play in MLS. Not that the player’s 18 months in North America have helped his team on the pitch; it is now three years in a row that Galaxy has failed to make the playoffs. But the team is certainly making a pretty penny overcharging fans for tickets. If the team loses David Beckham, then they have to find some other way to excuse the high ticket prices; they definitely cannot do it on team performance since they literally suck monkey balls.

At the end of the day, it really looks like Beckham will join the many other soccer stars who went to North America in hopes of popularizing the game of soccer. And like all others, he has failed to help make the MLS anything more than just a footnote in American sports.

After what I would say was a very disappointing first season in MLS, David Beckham has made the trip back to Europe to train with English club Arsenal during the MLS off-season. Apparently, England’s superstar wants to make sure that he is fit for his next appearance with the national team and maybe impress Fabio Capello, i.e., England’s new head coach. I don’t really know if it is worth it though considering that Beckham and Capello didn’t have the best of relationships when the two worked for Real Madrid.

Of course, upon hearing the news, many speculated that Beckham may be making a bold move for a European return but Arsenal’s manager Arsene Wenger promptly shut everyone up simply stating, “He comes only to keep fit and work hard.”

Here is hoping that David finally gets his 100th cap with the national team.

Beckham hasn’t quite completed his transition from European to American soccer but he sure realized the obviousness of the truth. Major League Soccer sucks! To be fair, this is far more obvious when comparing MLS to the higher quality competition of European leagues. According to an article on Times Online,

Barely a month after lifting the Spanish title with esteemed Real Madrid teammates such as Raúl and Ruud van Nistelrooy, Beckham had to endure the sight of his new colleagues being embarrassed in a 3-0 home defeat by Tigres, the Mexican club. Miserable and unacceptable were the words used by Alexei Lalas, the Galaxy general manager, who must have been squirming in his seat next to his club’s new star signing.

Maybe Beckham thought that because Lalas was ready and willing to pay him 250 million dollars to make the trip to the American continent that MLS was a good league. Surprise Mr. Beckham, but it ain’t. And you know what? It is only going to get worst for you from now on since all of these hacks that you will have the pleasure to play against are going to won’t a piss of you. Why? Because, they will be trying to make a name for themselves by shutting you down. I hope that you are ready for all the heat. Maybe it is not too late to go back to Europe.
