Uruguay striker Alvaro RecobaAlvaro Recoba played his first game in the Greek Superleague last Saturday and made his presence felt immediately as he helped his team turn a 1-0 losing game to a 2-1 victory. The Uruguay midfielder who signed with Panionios a couple of months ago after playing for a decade in the Italian Serie A and most recently Inter Milan had recently said that he is better than Brazilian star Rivaldo who also played in the Greek soccer league for 4 years until last September. El Chino as Recoba is known put his money where his mouth is by contributing two assists for his team’s 2 goals on their first victory of the season. After the game, Alvaro said that this is only the beginning and that better soccer and more beautiful plays are on their way. Greek soccer is fortunate to be home to such a great player and human being.

In other action, Olympiacos widened their lead from all other teams after an easy 2-0 victory over lowly Panthrakikos. At the same time, Panathinaikos played to a scoreless draw with the still undefeated PAOK. Similarly, AEK lost more points in their pursuit of Olympiacos after a 1-1 draw with Larisa at home. After 6 games, it looks like this year we are likely to see permanent Greek soccer champion Olympiacos finish at the top. There are still many games to be played but it is clear that the Piraeus club once again has the best squad in the Superleague.
